SEARCH FOR EXCELLENCE SUCCESSFULLY CONCLUDES
A crowd of more than 200 guests learned “who will strike up the band” on Saturday evening when the Erie Philharmonic announced that their new music director and conductor is Daniel Meyer.
Meyer, who was in Erie in March to conduct the Phil’s fourth symphonic concert of the season, was introduced following trumpeted fanfare and after arriving at the podium in an antique car.
“We're so pleased with the selection of Daniel Meyer as the Erie Philharmonic's next Music Director,” Board President and chair of the music director search committee Christie Ferrier said as she introduced Meyer. “He demonstrated many of the artistic and personal attributes that were critical during the search.”
“ While we were blessed with a final five that were extraordinary candidates, Daniel was the unanimous choice of the board of directors and the overwhelming favorite of the rest of the Erie Phil family and those in the community who joined the search,” Ferrier said.
Throughout the 2007-2008 season, Meyer will continue to serve as Resident Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony, Music Director of the Asheville Symphony, and Music Director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra. Recognized as one of the top young conductors of his generation, Meyer conducts over 40 performances a year in Pittsburgh, including subscription, pops, community, and education concerts. This season he led the orchestra in the world premiere of Richard Danielpour’s Pastime, based on the lives of the great American ballplayers Jackie Robinson, Josh Gibson, and Henry Aaron.
With a talent for creative concerts and a passion for connecting with audiences, he led the Pittsburgh Symphony’s Symphony with a Splash, an innovative series designed for professionals, as well as a Sunday matinee series for families called Popular Classics.
Meyer has also conducted orchestras in Cleveland, Utah, Forth Worth, San Antonio, Syracuse, Tallahassee, Mansfield, Northeastern Pennsylvania, Youngstown, Santa Barbara, Lansing, and Wheeling.
A native of Cleveland, Meyer is a graduate of Denison University and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. As a doctoral student at Boston University, Mr. Meyer received the Orchestral Conducting Honors Award. He also studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar.
The evening’s announcement took place at a ticketed fundraising event at the country estate of long-time Phil supporter Karen Black. The presenting sponsor of the evening was Hanes Erie, Inc.
THANK YOU FOR JOINING THE SEARCH!
The Erie Philharmonic would like to say thank you to everyone who "joined the search" this past season. After each symphonic concert, many comments were received online and through the mail. Your interest in the orchestra's success is appreciated.
